Not the DPF, automatically. Opening thing to get straight. A diagnostic comes before any treatment, because that same dash light has plenty of likely faults behind it.
The use you do in the meantime matters. That is the other thing.
- Car still driving fine on an amber light — attempt a long steady run first. It costs zero and regularly sorts the filter without assistance.
- That window has shut once the vehicle has slipped into limp mode. A drive will not help now.
- Get it looked at rather than driving it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
What the car has been telling you
Last news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for a while before it shows:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they always did
- worse fuel economy
- the stop/start without a word packing in
- the cabin smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
That is not conclusive by itself. Alongside the light beside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Why diesel particulate filters choke round Helme
The driving that goes with a small village like Helme is the least kind kind for a DPF. Nothing of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to Meltham Moor Primary School, Moor View standing at half eight, five minutes to Morrisons, the run to Slaithwaite.
