What to check when the DPF light shows
First thing: it is not necessarily the DPF. Cleaning is not where a visit starts. A diagnostic is — plenty of faults show up as the same light.
How the car is run in the meantime makes a difference too.
- Worth a try before you call anything: amber light, motor driving normally, just one steady run, no outlay.
- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has already closed.

Signs the car has been sending you
Symptoms have generally been growing for weeks before the light even shows. Belated news, in other words:
- power falling off, especially pulling uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they always went
- fuel consumption going worse
- a stop/start that has quietly given up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears
That is not conclusive on its own. Alongside the light beside them, the filter is a fair guess.
