By the time the light appears, things have usually been slipping for a while. It is last news:
- less power, above all going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- economy that is worse than before
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears
None of that is proof alone. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
