Before the light, what the motor was showing you
Late news, the light. The symptoms generally grow for a while before it appears:
- power tailing off, above all pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as before
- fuel economy going worse
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Heathgates
For a DPF, the poorest motoring is the type you meet in a residential suburb such as Heathgates.
