It could not be the DPF whatsoever. That is the main thing. That light can arise from a number of faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a diagnostic and not with treatment.
How the motor is run in the meantime counts too.
- Worth a shot before you call anything: amber light, motor driving as normal, just one steady run, no outlay.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not touch it. The window has closed.
- Get it checked rather than using it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the throttle, has gone past the long-run stage.
The car has been showing you already
By the time the light arrives, things have generally been deteriorating for weeks. It is late news:
- power dropping away, above all pulling uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did
- worse fuel use
- the stop/start quietly packing in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
None of that is proof on its own. The light beside them points at a blocked filter.
