Harborne, West Midlands: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Treating the DPF is done at the car, not at a workshop. The engineer pulls up at your place across Harborne and sets up. The diesel particulate filter is treated still on the car, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you hold on to the filter you started with.

You'll know a price by phone before anyone departs, the clean beginning from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.

The light is already on and the motor is down on power — that is how we usually meet people, and precisely what this page covers.

The DPF light is on. What then?

The DPF is not always what is to blame, and that comes first. A clean is not where a visit opens. A diagnostic is — several faults register as the same signal.

Second thing: how you handle it between now and then counts.

  • Motor yet driving normally on an amber light — have a go at a long even run first. It costs nothing at all and regularly shifts the filter without assistance.
  • Once the car is in limp mode, motoring will not touch it. The window has shut.
  • A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the stage to stop planning long drives and call.

Signs the car has been showing you

Symptoms have generally been mounting for weeks before the light ever shows. Late news, in other words:

  • tailing off on power, above all uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
  • the fuel consumption is down
  • the stop/start quietly bowing out
  • diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears

By itself, none of that is evidence. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.

What clogs diesel particulate filters round Harborne

Being a residential suburb, Harborne generates just the use a DPF copes with the poorest. The school run to St Peters CofE Primary School, Milford Road at a halt at half eight, five minutes to Waitrose, the hop to University (Birmingham) — nothing of it runs long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. The soot builds up rather than clearing.

The M5 sits under 3 miles from Harborne, Birmingham under 3 miles off, and unless something pulls you out that way routinely, full weeks go by without the long steady run that scours a unit. Geography does not assist.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working

It is self-protection: that is all limp mode is. A long drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is just what limp mode rules out: power limited, revs kept low, no regeneration on offer.

Sound advice, that motorway run — right up until the point it is not. In limp mode you are beyond that line: treatment is what will help, not more miles.

Call-out DPF cleaning where the motor stands round Harborne

The filter does not budge. That is the bit most people do not expect: the job is done with the DPF yet fitted to the motor, on your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the car can stand for a while.

A scan comes first — live data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by mass, and a look over of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated components, so other faults are cleared before a thing is cleaned.

A cleaning solution after that is fed in through the access point on that vehicle, expanding inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never move. Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to require doing twice.

A regeneration follows, burning off what the clean has lifted. Either it goes as a monitored drive out of Harborne, with you there, or it goes where the motor stands and the live data is checked afterwards.

Both read-outs go over by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second check is what verifies the change, clears the light and lists whatever is still outstanding.

What a DPF clean will not fix

A filter blocked with soot and ash is the one thing treatment cures. It will not help:

  • a pressure sensor reporting a restriction that is not there
  • the EGR valve jammed open
  • an AdBlue system problem
  • injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration completing whatsoever
  • oil working through the filter from a faulty turbo

Which is why the scan happens first. You are told before any work starts, not after you have handed over, where it turns out to be one of those.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no solution. What gets searched for as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your existing filter is cleaned in place and goes back into work.

Prices for DPF cleaning across Harborne

The clean starts from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that goes with it.

Once we are told what you run, and roughly what the filter will take, the number gets fixed on the phone. A single price for every job would not be straight. The vehicle shifts it, and so does the location — Harborne, Lodge Hill, or anywhere further out in the B postcode area.

Where the diagnostic says a clean will not work, you are not asked to pay for treatment. The call-out charge still stands, because the visit, the check and the advice have happened.

The work carries a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Harborne if the light comes back inside that time.

Vehicles we clean, and where we travel round Harborne

The filter is treated where it sits on all of them: cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery, agricultural machinery. Nothing is carried anywhere.

The same run that keeps engineers on Milford Road most weeks covers Harborne, Lodge Hill, Weoley Castle and the places beyond Blackheath. Coverage runs UK-wide, so even further out through West Midlands is nonetheless worth a call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

What Harborne drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Is a long drive enough by itself?
Soon enough, and with the vehicle out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. A long run at motorway speed is what it wants — not five minutes flat to Waitrose and back.
How long does the visit take?
Reckon on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean adding to that where the filter is heavily blocked.
Cost around Harborne — what is it?
Beginning from £299, with a charge for the call-out that pays for the scan and advice on what to do next. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the number.
Have I have to be there?
No. The motor needs somewhere to stand for a couple of hours; you need not stand with it. Choosing to be there is no problem: the regeneration then is done out on the move, monitored.
Travelling to Harborne — how soon?
Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is normal. Ring 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what is free across the B area.
Does the filter leave the motor?
Not on the call-out service — it is cleaned where it is. Taking a filter off or putting one back on amount to anything a job we do in either direction.
Suppose the light returns?
Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Harborne.
