It may not be the filter in the end. That is the first thing. A number of faults put the same light on the very same dash, which is why a visit begins with a check rather than with a clean.
It matters what you get with the motor between now and the visit.
- Worth a shot before you call anything: amber light, motor driving normally, just one even run, no outlay.
- Motor already fallen into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not shift it now.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop planning long drives and get it checked.
Signs the car has been giving you
Last news, the light. The symptoms usually build for some time before it shows:
- power dropping away, particularly going uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they always did
- worse fuel consumption
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the box
On its own, none of that is proof. The light with them suggests a loaded filter.
The cause diesel particulate filters clog around Handless
For a DPF, the worst driving is the sort you find around a small village such as Handless. Run through a normal week: Stiperstones CofE Primary School and home again, The Portway at a standstill before the hour, a five-minute run to Your Coop Food, a run to Church Stretton. None of it there goes on long enough or is hot enough to see through a regeneration. Soot that should burn away collects instead.

Limp mode is the vehicle looking after itself. The entire difficulty is that a sustained drive works by starting a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not pull and power is limited.
So the usual advice to get it up the motorway is sound advice, until the day it is not. Beyond that stage — limp mode — road work will not do it, and the filter needs cleaning.

On your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can stand for a couple of hours: the job takes place with the filter even now bolted on, which is the part most people do not expect.
First a diagnostic. Real-time ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a mass, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the connected parts — all of it logged before any of it is cleaned.
Then the treatment. A cleaning fluid goes in through the access point on that vehicle and expands inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never budge. A second pass is sometimes needed on heavily loaded filters.
A regeneration comes next, driving off what the clean has loosened. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Handless; if not, in place where the vehicle stands, with the running data checked after.
Finally the check runs again — the change proven, the light put out, anything still open noted. Both read-outs come to you by email, so the numbers are on record.
Where treatment is not the answer
Only one fault is answered by a clean: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:
- temperature or pressure sensors flagging a blockage that is not there
- EGR valves that jam open
- an AdBlue system failure
- injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration starting in the first place
- a turbo pushing oil through the filter
That is what the first scan is for. If it turns out to be one of those, you are warned before any work begins rather than after you have handed over for it.
Two things more worth knowing. Having the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a functioning DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is treated in place and sent back into use.
