Before the light, what the car was telling you
By the time the light appears, things have usually been slipping for weeks. It is late news:
- pulling uphill, the power drops away
- an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
- worse fuel consumption
- the stop/start without a word giving up
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
By itself, none of that is evidence. Next to the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is loaded.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Hampton Beech
