- Once the vehicle is in limp mode, motoring will not reach it. The window has shut.
- Stop booking long drives and get it seen to if the car smells of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.
The motor has been showing you already
Symptoms have normally been building for weeks before the light ever shows. Last news, in other words:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they used to
- the fuel use is worse
- the stop/start without a word giving up
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
The cause diesel particulate filters block around Hampstead Heath
Being a residential suburb, Hampstead Heath throws up just the use a DPF handles the poorest. None of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration: the school run to Christ Church Primary School, Hampstead, Wildwood Rise standing at half past eight, ten minutes to Sainsbury's, the hop to the nearest station. - pressure sensors showing a block that is not there
- an EGR valve held open
- AdBlue system failures
- faulty glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever starts
- oil passing through the filter from a worn turbo
Finding that out is the first diagnostic's job. When it is found to be one of those, you are warned before any work starts rather than after you have paid for it.
Hollowing the filter out is not a solution: without a working DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the term people look up, though nothing is swapped — your original filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth knowing.
