Mobile DPF Cleaning around Hallyards and Scottish Borders
Treating the DPF is done at the motor, not at a workshop. A technician arrives at your door across Hallyards, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the motor, performs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you started with.
Nobody leaves until the price is settled over the phone. The visit runs typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.
Most owners find us with the light already on, and the vehicle down on power. That is the position this page is written for.
DPF light on? What to do
The unit is not automatically what is at fault, and that goes first. Cleaning is not where a visit begins. A check is — plenty of faults appear as the same warning.
Second thing: how you run it between now and then counts.
- A long steady run may even now do it, provided the light is amber and the car drives as normal. Costs nothing, so attempt that before calling.
- Motor already dropped into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not touch it now.
- Get it seen to rather than running it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
What the car has been telling you
Late news, the light. The symptoms tend to mount for a while before it appears:
- dropping away on power, especially uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they always did
- consumption that is worse than before
- a stop/start that has meekly given up
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Alone, none of that is proof. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Blocked diesel particulate filters round Hallyards, and the cause
Hallyards is an area, and the day-to-day driving that goes with one is the poorest kind for a DPF. The school run to the local primary school, A72 at a standstill at the morning rush, five minutes to Sainsbury's, the dash to the nearest station — nothing of it goes on long enough or is hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. Unburnt soot that should burn off banks up instead.
The A74(M) lies under 25 miles from Hallyards, Edinburgh under 25 miles out, and unless something takes you out that way regularly, whole weeks slip past without the sustained run that clears a filter. Geography does not help.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer run
Limp mode is the motor protecting itself. A long drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode rules out: power limited, revs pinned, no regeneration on offer.
Good advice, that motorway run — up until the moment it is not. The filter wants treatment rather than more driving once the car has gone into limp mode.
On-site DPF cleaning where the car stands across Hallyards
The filter does not come off. That is the part most owners do not anticipate: the job is done with the DPF still bolted to the car, on your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the car can wait for a few hours.
Nothing is touched until other faults are eliminated. That requires a diagnostic first: running data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by mass, and a review of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and related hardware.
Then the treatment. A cleaning fluid goes in through the access port on that vehicle and expands inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never move. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to take doing twice.
Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean freed. Either it runs as a monitored drive out of Hallyards, with you along, or it is done where the motor waits and the running data is checked afterwards.
Both read-outs come through by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second diagnostic is what confirms the change, clears the light and logs whatever is still showing.
When a DPF clean is not the fix
One thing is what a clean fixes — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- a pressure or temperature sensor showing a restriction that is not there
- the EGR valve held open
- a failure in the AdBlue system
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration starting whatsoever
- a turbo pushing oil through the filter
Which is why the scan comes first. When one of those proves the fault, you hear about it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands altogether.
Two more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your original filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
What DPF cleaning comes to around Hallyards
Any visit carries a call-out charge — travelling to you, making the booking, carrying out the scan and passing on the advice. The clean itself starts from £299.
Once we know what you run, and about what the filter will need, the price gets agreed by phone. A single price for all would not be honest. Two separate things move it: what you run, and where you are — Hallyards itself, over at Glenternie, or farther out across the EH postcode area.
You are not charged for cleaning that the check says will not do it. Because the visit, the check and the advice have happened, the call-out charge still holds.
A 30-day warranty includes aftercare on the work, and that includes an engineer heading back out to Hallyards if the light reappears inside the time.
Zoltan was amazing, courteous very professional and polite, he's given my Dads car a new lease of life as he needs the car for his Cancer treatment. Dad and I thank Zoltan for your work. A real gentleman. Thank you.
Zac was very helpful and friendly. Explained the process clearly and solved my issue with engine management light. Would recommend to anyone with dpf issues. 5 star from me!
Liam has done a great job. All things fully explained and good feedback. Your company has been excellent from the initial phone call. Will definitely recommend you to others.
The vehicles we clean and the patch we reach near Hallyards
Private cars, vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery, agricultural vehicles — one call-out service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is done on the vehicle rather than carried anywhere.
Nearly every week there is by then someone on A72, so Hallyards hardly ever means a journey of its own, and Glenternie, Barns and the places past Peebles are on the way. Coverage is UK-wide, so even further out around Scottish Borders is nonetheless worth a call, and what picks between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

Questions Hallyards drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Does a long run shift it?
- If you get it early enough, and the vehicle is not in limp mode, sometimes. It needs a long run at motorway speed, not fifteen minutes flat to Sainsbury's and back.
- How long does the visit take?
- Reckon on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean lengthening that where the filter is heavily clogged.
- What does it cost in Hallyards?
- The call-out charge pays for the visit, the check and the advice; cleaning itself opens from £299. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both change the price.
- Is it needed for me to be present?
- No. The car needs somewhere to sit for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. Choosing to be there is no problem: the regeneration then is done out on the road, monitored.
- Travelling to Hallyards — how soon?
- That hangs on the calendar, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ask 0303 330 1830 what is available across the EH area.
- Does the filter come off the motor?
- It is cleaned where it is, on the call-out service. Neither job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not something we do.
- What if the light returns?
- An engineer comes back out to Hallyards — the 30-day warranty covers aftercare.
