Hackness, North Yorkshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The car stays where it is — call-out DPF cleaning travels to it. An engineer comes at your door over in Hackness, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the vehicle, runs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you came with.

Nobody leaves until the figure is agreed by the phone. The visit lasts typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.

The light is showing and the car is low on power — that is how we normally meet people, and precisely what this page deals with.

The DPF light is on. What next?

First thing: it is not necessarily the filter. That light can come from plenty of faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a check and not with treatment.

The driving you get in the meantime matters. That is the next thing.

  • Amber light, vehicle yet driving as normal — a long even run can even now clear it by itself. Costs zero, and worth trying before you ring anything.
  • Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has closed.
  • A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under the throttle, is the stage to stop booking long drives and book it in.

The vehicle has been showing you already

By the time the light appears, things have normally been deteriorating for weeks. It is last news:

  • power tailing off, especially going uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
  • consumption that is worse than before
  • stop/start silently bowing out
  • the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on

Alone, none of that is proof. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.

Why diesel particulate filters clog round Hackness

For a DPF, the least kind motoring is the type you get around a village such as Hackness. Not one bit of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to Hackness Church of England Primary School, Suffield Hill standing at half eight, five minutes to Proudfoot, the hop to Scarborough. What should burn off stays behind.

Where you sit does not assist either. The M62 is under 50 miles from Hackness and York is under 50 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way regularly, whole weeks pass without the long steady run that could clear the filter by itself.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working

It is self-protection: that is all limp mode means. The entire catch is that a sustained drive works by setting off a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not rise and power is limited.

So the standard advice to get it up the motorway is sensible advice, right until it is not. Once the motor is in limp mode you are beyond that point, and the filter wants a clean rather than driving.

The filter does not leave it. That is the detail most people do not anticipate: the job takes place with the DPF even now fitted to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, any place the car can sit for a few hours.

First a diagnostic. Live ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a weight, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the related components — all of it taken before a thing is started.

Then comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the car's own entry point, expanding inside the filter and loosening what a regeneration will not. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to take doing twice.

A regeneration comes next, burning off what the clean has freed. Stay with the car and it turns into a monitored drive out of Hackness. Leave it and the regeneration runs statically, with live data verified once it is done.

Then a second scan, confirming the change, putting out the warning light and logging anything still showing. Both read-outs are sent over, so the before and after figures are recorded.

When a DPF clean is not the solution

Only one fault is fixed by treatment: the filter clogged with ash and soot. It does nothing for:

  • sensors, pressure, showing a blockage that is not real
  • an EGR valve held open
  • an AdBlue system fault
  • worn glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
  • the turbo putting oil into the filter

Which is why the diagnostic comes first. If one of those is the fault, you find out about it at the outset rather than once the money has gone for good.

DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is exchanged: the filter you already own is cleaned where it sits and put back to work. Nor is having it cut out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth noting.

DPF cleaning prices in Hackness

A call-out charge stands whatever happens, and pays for the visit, the booking fee, the diagnostic and the advice given. The clean itself starts from £299.

The figure is agreed on the phone, once we know the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. No flat rate could be straight. The vehicle changes it, and so does the postcode — Hackness, Silpho, or a spot farther out in the YO postcode area.

If the scan rules cleaning out, there is no charge to pay for it. What nonetheless holds is the call-out charge, since the visit was made, the check was carried out and the advice was given.

The work carries a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Hackness if the light comes back inside that window.

Very friendly polite operative who arrived on time messaged me to say he was here. Told me there wasn't a fault with the DPF so there would be no charge gave me a few suggestions on what it might be so will check those out. Thanks Chris.

The tech attended on site in good time and sorted the DPF out on our 4 x 4 thank you! Northgate.

Logan came out today at very short notice, was very efficient and knowledgeable. Highly recommended, he was even able to explain things in terms I could understand. an outstanding engineer!!!

What we clean, and how far we reach round Hackness

Private cars, panel vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant machinery, agricultural vehicles — one call-out service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is cleaned in place rather than carried anywhere.

Hackness is hardly ever a special trip: our engineers are working Suffield Hill week in week out, and the same run takes in Silpho, Langdale End and the spots out past Burniston. Further out through North Yorkshire is even so worth ringing about — coverage runs UK-wide, and it is the schedule rather than the distance that decides between one day and the next.

What Hackness drivers want to know about DPF cleaning

Can I merely take it for a long drive?
If you spot it in time, and the car is not in limp mode, sometimes. That requires motorway speed for a long run, rather than a quick trip to Proudfoot.
The visit runs how long?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly blocked filter can require cleaning twice, which takes longer.
How much does it cost around Hackness?
Beginning from £299, with a charge for coming out that takes in the scan and advice on what to do next. The vehicle and your address both shift the price, so we price on the phone.
Is it necessary for me to be there?
The vehicle needs a place for two hours or so. You need not be in it. If you would sooner come along, the regeneration can be run as a supervised drive instead.
How soon can someone get to Hackness?
That depends on the calendar, but it is often same-day or next-day. Call 0303 330 1830 and you will know what is free across the YO area.
Does the filter come off the vehicle?
Done where it sits, on this service, so no. We will not lift filters off or bolt them back on, either way.
What if the light reappears?
An engineer travels back out to Hackness — the 30-day warranty covers aftercare.
