Before the light, what the car was warning you
By the time the light appears, things have generally been going wrong for a while. It is last news:
- less power, above all climbing uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they always did
- worse fuel economy
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
None of that is proof on its own. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.
