By the time the light arrives, things have usually been going wrong for a while. It is late news:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they used to
- worse fuel economy
- the stop/start quietly packing in
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.

Two more worth noting. Leaving the filter cut out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a working DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleaned in place and returned into use.
