First thing: it is not automatically the unit. That light can come from a number of faults, not just one, so the visit opens with a check and not with cleaning.

- A long even run may even now do it, provided the light is amber and the motor runs normally. Costs nothing at all, so have a go at that before ringing.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has by then closed.
- A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the point to stop planning long drives and book it in.
What the vehicle has been telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have usually been mounting for a while:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- fuel consumption going worse
- stop/start without a word packing in
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. The light beside them indicates a full filter.
The reason diesel particulate filters clog round Gilgarran
Gilgarran is a rural village, and the motoring that comes with one is the poorest sort for a DPF. Nothing of it goes on long enough or is hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to Distington Community School, The Avenue crawling at the morning rush, a few minutes to Asda, the hop to Harrington. Getting it up the motorway is the common advice, and it stands right up to a limit. The filter needs treatment rather than more driving once the motor has dropped into limp mode.

- faulty glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
- a turbo putting oil through the filter

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal, so that is no solution. What gets typed in as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into service.
