Your DPF light is lit — what then?
First thing: it is not automatically the unit. A check comes before any cleaning, because that same dashboard light has a number of likely faults behind it.
How the vehicle is driven in the meantime makes a difference too.
- Worth a try before you ring anything: amber light, vehicle driving normally, just one even run, no charge.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has now closed.
- Stop booking long drives and get it checked if the car reeks of diesel or there is black smoke when you press on.
Before the light, what the motor was warning you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms usually mount for a while before it arrives:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- worse fuel economy
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
By itself, none of that is conclusive. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Gam
The driving that belongs to a small village like Gam is the poorest sort for a DPF. Look at a normal week: St Breward Community Primary School and back, Wet Lane at a crawl before half nine, a short hop to Co-op Food, a dash to Bodmin Parkway. Two things more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter hollowed out is not a fix — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your existing filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
