What the car has been warning you
The light is late news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been building for weeks:
- less power, especially going uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- the fuel economy is down
- the stop/start silently giving up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears
That is not proof on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round Fulwell
