Fowey, Cornwall: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With on-site DPF cleaning, we drive out to the motor. Your vehicle isn't taken away and the filter will not budge. An engineer arrives at your address across Fowey, clears the diesel particulate filter on the motor and carries out a DPF regeneration.
You'll be given a price by phone before anyone goes, the clean starting from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.
Written for the situation most callers are in: the light on already, the car short for power, and the visit still to fix.
What to check when the DPF light shows
First thing: it is not automatically the DPF. A number of faults put the same light on the identical panel, which is why a visit opens with a check rather than with treatment.
Second thing: how you drive it between now and then matters.
- Amber light, motor even now driving fine — a long even run can yet shift it on its own. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you book anything.
- That window has gone once the car has slipped into limp mode. Driving will not do it now.
- Stop arranging long drives and get it seen to if the car smells of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.
Signs the car has been sending you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms tend to build for a while before it shows:
- climbing uphill, the power tails off
- the revs no longer rise the way they used to
- worse fuel consumption
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- the interior reeking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
On its own, none of that is proof. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
What clogs diesel particulate filters round Fowey
For a DPF, the least kind use is the kind you find around a coastal town such as Fowey. Look at an ordinary week: Fowey Primary School and home again, South Street at a standstill before half nine, a short hop to Co-op Food, a dash to Par. Not much there runs long enough or runs hot enough to complete a regeneration. Soot that should clear banks up instead.
Except when you have a regular reason to drive out to the M5, over 50 miles from Fowey, or out to Truro under 25 miles away, weeks slip past without a long steady drive. Geography is unhelpful.
DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode stops it
What limp mode comes down to is the car defending itself. A sustained drive works by setting off a regeneration, and that is exactly what limp mode blocks: power held down, revs pinned, no regeneration available.
So the common advice to run it up the motorway is good advice, until it stops being. In limp mode you are past that point: treatment is what will help, not more road work.
Where the vehicle stands is where the DPF is cleaned in Fowey
The filter does not come off. That is the detail most drivers do not see coming: the job is done with the DPF still fixed to the vehicle, on your front, in a work car park, any place the car can stand for a couple of hours.
The ECU is taken first, reporting soot load by percentage and by weight, along with a look over of sensor readings, glow plugs and related hardware, so nothing is touched while another fault is still open.
Then the cleaning. A cleaning fluid is injected through the entry point on that car and expands inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never budge. Heavily loaded filters sometimes take a second pass.
Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean lifted. Either it is done as a monitored drive out of Fowey, with you along, or it is done where the car sits and the live data is verified afterwards.
Finally the check runs again — the change verified, the light reset, anything still showing written down. Both read-outs arrive with you by email, so the numbers are recorded.
What a DPF clean will not cure
One thing is what treatment fixes — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- the wrong reading from a temperature sensor
- a stuck-open EGR valve
- a fault in the AdBlue system
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration running whatsoever
- turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter
That is what the first check is for. Where it proves to be one of those, you are let know before any work starts rather than after you have settled up a penny.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no fix. What gets searched for as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your own filter is cleared in place and goes back into work.
Costs for DPF cleaning around Fowey
Each visit carries a call-out charge — getting to you, making the booking, running the check and giving the advice. The clean itself begins from £299.
Once we are told what you own, and broadly what the filter will need, the number gets agreed by phone. A single price for all would not be honest. A pair of things shift it: what you own, and where you are — Fowey itself, across at Polruan, or further out across the PL postcode area.
If the diagnostic counts a clean out, there is not a penny to pay for it. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have taken place, the call-out charge still stands.
Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer comes back to Fowey.
The engineer called Daz was excellent he was very friendly and personable and very knowledgeable about his work. My car is great again now.
Jamie was a star gave me an ETA and text well before appointment time. Arrived and got straight to work. Listed a few faults and explained clearly once I have these fixes they will come back and do the regen for free. Highly recommended.
Great work from Daz cleaning the DPF and all round great advice and information. And all done at home with their door to door service.
The vehicles we clean and the area we take in round Fowey
Cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant machinery, farm vehicles — a single on-site service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is treated on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.
The same run that puts engineers on South Street most weeks covers Fowey, Polruan, Lescrow and the spots beyond Bodinnick. Phone anyway from even further out through Cornwall. Coverage reaches UK-wide, and the day you are offered comes down to the schedule rather than how far away you are.

What Fowey drivers wonder about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough by itself?
- Sometimes, if you spot it early enough and the car has not slipped into limp mode. That requires motorway speed for a long spell, rather than a brief trip to Co-op Food.
- The visit lasts how long?
- Expect typically around 2 hours — severely blocked filters sometimes require a second pass, which lengthens it.
- The cost across Fowey — what is it?
- Starting from £299, with a charge for the call-out that pays for the scan and advice on what to do next. We settle it on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both shift the figure.
- Do I have to be there?
- The motor wants a space for two hours or so. You need not be in it. Ride along if you like, and the regeneration turns into a supervised drive.
- How soon can someone come to Fowey?
- Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is normal. One call to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the PL area has open.
- Is the filter lifted off the car?
- Not on the mobile service — it is treated where it is. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
- Suppose the light reappears?
- An engineer heads back out to Fowey — the 30-day warranty covers aftercare.
