Four Throws, Kent: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The motor stays where it is — call-out DPF cleaning goes to it. No workshop, no filter coming off. A fitter comes to your place in Four Throws, clears the diesel particulate filter where it is, runs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you started with.

Allow for the visit lasting typically around 2 hours. The clean opens from £299, agreed over the phone before anyone leaves.

Most owners find us with the light showing, and the motor low on power. That is exactly what this page is written for.

The DPF light is on. What next?

The unit is not automatically what is at fault, and that goes first. Cleaning is not where a visit opens. A diagnostic is — plenty of faults show up as the same warning.

How the motor is driven in the meantime counts too.

  • Amber light, car yet driving normally — a long steady run can yet clear it alone. Costs nothing, and worth attempting before you call anything.
  • That window has closed once the motor has slipped into limp mode. Driving will not do it now.
  • Stop arranging long drives and get it looked at if the car stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.

The vehicle has been showing you already

Last news, the light. The symptoms usually build for weeks before it appears:

  • less power, above all climbing uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
  • the fuel economy is worse
  • a stop/start that has meekly packed in
  • the cabin smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away

Any one of those, taken by itself, is not conclusive. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.

Why diesel particulate filters clog around Four Throws

Four Throws is a rural village, and the driving that goes with one is the poorest sort for a DPF. The school run to Hawkhurst Church of England Primary School, Conghurst Lane at a standstill at half eight, a few minutes to Tesco, the run to Etchingham — none of it goes on long enough or is hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. Instead of clearing, the unburnt soot banks up.

Neither is a long way from Four Throws: under 15 miles to the M20, under 50 miles to Canterbury. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the run that would clear a filter hardly ever happens.

DPF regeneration, and the stage limp mode kills it

It is self-preservation: that is all limp mode is. With power capped and the revs pinned, the regeneration the filter wants will not happen at all. That tells, because triggering one is just what a motorway run does.

The standard advice — get it up the motorway — is sound, right until it is not. Beyond that stage — limp mode — driving will not manage it, and the filter requires cleaning.

Cleaning a clogged diesel particulate filter in Four Throws, Kent

Call-out DPF cleaning where the vehicle stands across Four Throws

On your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can stand for a while: the job takes place with the filter yet fitted on, which is the detail most people do not anticipate.

The ECU is interrogated first, giving soot load by percent and by mass, along with a review of sensors, glow plugs and associated components, so nothing is started while another fault is still possible.

A cleaning solution next is injected through the access port on that vehicle, spreading inside the filter to lift soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never move. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to require doing twice.

A regeneration follows, clearing what the clean has freed. Either it goes as a monitored drive out of Four Throws, with you present, or it goes where the motor waits and the running data is read once done.

Both reports come through by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second check is what verifies the change, clears the light and notes whatever is still open.

When a DPF clean is not the solution

Only one fault is cured by cleaning: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does no good for:

  • a pressure or temperature sensor showing a blockage that is not there
  • the EGR valve jammed open
  • AdBlue system problems
  • injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration running whatsoever
  • the turbo passing oil into the filter

Finding that out is the first scan's purpose. Transpiring to be one of them means hearing it before any work begins, not after settling up a penny.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no remedy. What gets searched for as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your filter is cleaned in place and goes back into service.

What DPF cleaning costs in Four Throws

The treatment opens from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that comes with it.

No flat rate would be straight, so the price is settled over the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. The motor moves it, and so does the postcode — Four Throws, Little Conghurst, or anywhere further out in the TN postcode area.

If the scan counts cleaning out, there is nothing to pay for it. What nonetheless holds is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the check was carried out and the advice was offered.

The clean comes with a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Four Throws if the light returns inside that period.

Engineer arrived within 2 hours of my phone call! He was polite and helpful, explained everything and did exactly what he said he would, perfect!

Prompt service from Liam who took 1 hour to discover the problem and advise accordingly, with no need to have a new DPF which was quoted at £1600 from Mazda. Weight off my mind, many thanks.

Harry B.

Liam was courteous, efficient and quickly sorted the blockage for us in the DPF. Very happy with the service provided. Would recommend.

Things Four Throws drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Does a long run shift it?
Sometimes, if you spot it in time and the motor has not slipped into limp mode. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it takes — not fifteen minutes or so to Tesco and back.
Does the visit last long?
It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily blocked filter can take a second clean, which adds to that.
Cost across Four Throws — what is it?
The call-out charge takes in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; cleaning itself opens from £299. Both the vehicle and where you are shift it, which is why quoting is done by phone.
Is it essential for me to be present?
You do not need to stand with it — the motor just needs somewhere to wait for a couple of hours. If you would prefer to come along, the regeneration can be done as a watched drive instead.
Getting to Four Throws — how soon?
It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the schedule. Phone 0303 330 1830 what is open across the TN area.
Does the filter come off the vehicle?
On the call-out service, no: the filter is treated in place. Taking a filter off or putting one back on amount to anything something we do in either direction.
What if the light reappears?
Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to Four Throws.
