Symptoms have usually been mounting for some time before the light so much as appears. Belated news, in other words:

- fuel use that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
Alone, none of that is proof. The light beside them indicates a loaded filter.
