The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been growing for weeks:
- power tailing off, above all going uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they used to
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. It is a fair guess the filter is full once the light is there too.
