- power falling off, above all going uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they used to

- stop/start silently bowing out
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears
By itself, none of that is proof. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.

Being a rural hamlet, Faucheldean throws up just the use a DPF copes with least well. None of it runs long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, Devon Lane barely moving at the morning rush, a few minutes to Sainsbury's, the dash to Uphall. - the wrong reading from a pressure or temperature sensor
- the EGR valve stuck open
- a problem in the AdBlue system
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration starting whatsoever
- oil passing through the filter from a failing turbo
The first diagnostic is there for just that. You are warned before the work gets going, not after you have handed over, if it turns out to be one of those.
Two more worth knowing. Leaving the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a working DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
