Before the light, what the vehicle was showing you
By the time the light arrives, things have normally been deteriorating for some time. It is late news:
- power falling off, especially going uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they used to
- the fuel use is poorer
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
By itself, none of that is evidence. With the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
