The DPF is not always what is to blame, and that leads. A number of faults put the very same light on the identical dashboard, which is why a visit begins with a check rather than with a clean.

Symptoms have normally been growing for weeks before the light so much as shows. Late news, in other words:
- pulling uphill, the power tails off

- worse fuel economy
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the box
On its own, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.
Why diesel particulate filters choke near Eton
