- A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has by then shut.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under the throttle — stop booking long drives and get it looked at.
What the motor has been warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been mounting for some time:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they always did
- economy that is worse than before
- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
That is not evidence alone. With the light with them, the filter is a fair guess.

For a DPF, the poorest motoring is the sort you find around a residential suburb such as Ermine. - EGR valves that jam open
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- a regeneration that hardly ever completes, because of glow plugs or injectors
- the turbo putting oil into the filter
That is what the first diagnostic is for. Transpiring to be one of them means finding out it before the work starts, not after handing over a penny.
Two things more worth knowing. Leaving the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF fails its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your own filter is cleared in place and returned into use.
