Symptoms have generally been growing for a while before the light ever shows. Last news, in other words:
- falling off on power, particularly uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- fuel use that is worse than before
- the stop/start quietly packing in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
The cause diesel particulate filters clog near Elberton
