- Amber light, car even now driving fine — a long even run can even now shift it on its own. Costs zero, and worth trying before you book anything.
- Motor already fallen into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not reach it now.
- Get it checked rather than driving it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
Signs the car has been sending you
The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have generally been building for some time:
- power dropping away, especially climbing uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- consumption that is worse than it was
- the stop/start without a word giving up
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
That is not conclusive alone. With the light beside them, the filter is a fair guess.
