Edrom, Scottish Borders: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Call-out DPF cleaning comes to the motor. An engineer turns up at your address across Edrom, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the motor, performs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you started with.
Nobody sets off until the price is agreed over the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean starts from £299.
Written for the situation most owners are in: the light on already, the car short for power, and the clean still to arrange.
DPF light on? What comes next
The filter is not necessarily what is to blame, and that goes first. A number of faults put the identical light on the identical dashboard, which is why a visit starts with a scan rather than with a clean.
It tells what you manage with the car between now and the visit.
- Car yet driving as normal on an amber light — attempt a long even run first. It costs nothing at all and often shifts the filter without help.
- Car already dropped into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not reach it now.
- Get it seen to rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
What the vehicle has been warning you
The light is late news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been growing for weeks:
- less power, particularly going uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they used to
- the fuel consumption is worse
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
Why diesel particulate filters choke round Edrom
Edrom is a village, and the day-to-day driving that belongs to one is the poorest kind for a DPF. Run through a typical week: the local primary school and home again, A6105 at a halt before nine, a five-minute run to The Co-operative Food, a dash to Reston. Nothing there goes on long enough or gets hot enough to complete a regeneration. The soot banks up rather than clearing.
Neither is far from Edrom: under 50 miles to the M8, under 50 miles to Edinburgh. Neither is on the way to much most weeks, though, so the run that would empty a filter hardly ever happens.
Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working
What limp mode amounts to is the car defending itself. The entire catch is that a proper drive works by setting off a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not climb and power is held down.
The common advice — run it up the motorway — is sound, right until it is not. In limp mode you are the far side of that stage: cleaning is what will help, not more miles.
The motor stays where it is for mobile DPF cleaning in Edrom
The filter does not budge. That is the part most people do not expect: the job takes place with the DPF still fitted to the vehicle, on your drive, in a work car park, wherever the motor can sit for a few hours.
A diagnostic goes first — running data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by weight, and a review of the sensor readings, glow plugs and connected hardware, so other faults are ruled out before any of it is cleaned.
Then comes the clean itself: cleaning fluid in through the motor's own access port, expanding inside the filter and loosening what a regeneration never can. A second pass is sometimes needed on heavily blocked filters.
A regeneration comes next, burning off what the clean has loosened. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Edrom; if not, statically where the car sits, with the live data checked afterwards.
Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change confirmed, the light put out, anything still outstanding logged. Both sets of figures arrive with you by email, so the numbers are kept.
The problems a DPF clean cannot answer
A clean answers one thing: a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- pressure or temperature sensors reporting a blockage that is not there
- an EGR valve jammed open
- an AdBlue system failure
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever completes
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
The first check is there for exactly that. When it proves to be one of those, you are warned before any work starts rather than after you have handed over a penny.
A couple more worth noting. Getting the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your existing filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
DPF cleaning costs in Edrom
Treatment starts from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it pays for the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.
No single flat rate would be straight, so the price is agreed by the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. Where you are tells as much as what you drive: Edrom itself, Blanerne nearby, or further out across the TD postcode area.
You are not billed for treatment that the diagnostic says will not work. What nonetheless stands is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the check was carried out and the advice was given.
The work comes with a 30-day warranty including aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Edrom if the light comes back inside that period.
Jason the engineer was prompt, professional and addressed the issue with my Mercedes to my satisfaction. Very pleased with the overall service received. Thanks Steve.
Liam did a thorough job and kept the car nice and clean. He thoroughly explained all he had done. Well done!
Very happy with the service. Liam arrived at agreed time and was very professional. He explain the process and answered all the questions I had.
What we clean, and how far we reach round Edrom
The filter is done where it sits on all of them: cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is taken anywhere.
Edrom is seldom a special trip: engineers are working A6105 nearly every week, and the same run picks up Blanerne, Buxley and the places out past Chirnside. It is the diary, not the distance, that decides whether it is one day or the next, and coverage extends UK-wide — so phone still from even further out through Scottish Borders.

Things Edrom drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough on its own?
- It can, provided you catch it in time and limp mode has not arrived. A steady run at motorway speed is what it takes — not five minutes or so to The Co-operative Food and back.
- How long does the visit take?
- Plan on typically around 2 hours — heavily blocked filters sometimes need a second pass, which lengthens it.
- Around Edrom, what does it come to?
- Cleaning opens from £299, and the call-out charge on top takes in the visit, the scan and the advice. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the number.
- Is it essential for me to be around?
- You need not stand with it — the car only requires somewhere to stand for a couple of hours. Travel along if you prefer, and the regeneration turns into a monitored drive.
- Coming to Edrom — how soon?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the diary. One ring to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the TD area has free.
- Does the filter come away from the motor?
- It is treated where it stands, on the mobile service. Lifting a filter off or bolting one back on count as anything work we do either way.
- The light returns — then what?
- The 30-day warranty takes in aftercare, including an engineer heading back to Edrom.
