Mobile DPF Cleaning across Ednam and Scottish Borders
The car sits put — call-out DPF cleaning goes to it. A fitter comes at your place across Ednam, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the car, runs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you came with.
Reckon on the visit taking typically around 2 hours. The clean starts from £299, agreed over the phone before anyone travels.
Written for the position most owners are in: the light showing, the vehicle short for power, and the visit still to arrange.
The DPF light is on. What then?
First thing: it is not always the DPF. That light can arise from several faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a diagnostic and not with treatment.
How the motor is run in the meantime makes a difference too.
- Amber light, car still driving normally — a long steady run can still sort it by itself. Costs nothing at all, and worth trying before you book anything.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has now gone.
- Stop planning long drives and get it seen to if the interior stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you press on.
Before the light, what the car was telling you
Last news, the light. The symptoms tend to build for some time before it shows:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- revs that will not climb the way they used to
- the fuel economy is poorer
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. Next to the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.
The reason diesel particulate filters clog near Ednam
The day-to-day driving that belongs to a village like Ednam is the worst type for a DPF. A regeneration wants the time and heat, and sees neither: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on B6461 at half eight, not on five minutes to The Co-operative Food, and not on the run to the nearest station. Soot that should burn off banks up instead.
Neither is a long way from Ednam: under 50 miles to the M8, under 50 miles to Edinburgh. Neither is on the way to anything most weeks, though, so the run that would clear a filter hardly ever gets made.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer complete
What limp mode amounts to is the vehicle defending itself. With pulling power limited and the revs kept low, the regeneration the filter needs will not run at all. That counts, because setting off one is precisely what a motorway run does.
Sound advice, that motorway run — up until the point it is not. The filter wants a clean rather than driving once the car has slipped into limp mode.
Where the vehicle stands is where the DPF is treated in Ednam
The filter does not come off. That is the part most owners do not expect: the job is done with the DPF yet bolted to the vehicle, on your driveway, in a work car park, wherever the vehicle can sit for a while.
Nothing is touched until other faults are cleared. That involves a scan first: running data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by weight, and a check of the sensors, glow plugs and related hardware.
After that comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the motor's own access point, expanding inside the filter and freeing what a regeneration cannot. Where the filter is badly clogged, allow for a second pass.
Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean lifted. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of Ednam; if not, on the spot where the car stands, with the live data checked afterwards.
Both reports come through by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second check is what confirms the change, clears the light and lists whatever is still outstanding.
Where a clean is not the solution
Treatment fixes one thing: a filter choked with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- the wrong figure from a temperature or pressure sensor
- EGR valves that jam open
- an AdBlue system problem
- a regeneration that hardly ever runs, because of glow plugs or injectors
- a turbo passing oil through the filter
That is what the first diagnostic is for. When it turns out to be one of those, you are let know before any work gets going rather than after you have settled up a penny.
DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is replaced: the filter you already own is cleaned where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it cut out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth knowing.
What DPF cleaning costs in Ednam
Each visit takes a call-out charge — getting to you, setting up the booking, doing the check and giving the advice. The clean itself opens from £299.
Publishing a flat rate would not be honest. We fix it on the phone, once the car and its probable needs are known. What you own and where you are both move it: Ednam itself, out at Edham, or otherwise out across the TD postcode area.
Treatment that will not help is not cleaning you pay for, and the scan is what says so. The call-out charge nonetheless stands, because the visit, the diagnostic and the advice have taken place.
Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer returns to Ednam.
Exceptional service, Logan was polite and personable. Explained the process and aftercare clearly, ensuring that everything was in order before asking for payment and leaving.
Great prompt next day service. Professional and reliable, fixed the issue and gave advice based upon experience of my model. Would recommend.
A very efficient service by the 2 men that came to me today. It didn't take too long, very professional and i'm so pleased, thank you, Anita Robertson-Wynne.
Where we get to round Ednam, and what we clean
One on-site service takes in cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant and construction machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is done in place rather than taken anywhere.
Our engineers are along B6461 week in week out, so Ednam is seldom a journey of its own, and the same run picks up Edham, Houndridge and the places out past Stichill. Ring anyway from further out around Scottish Borders. Coverage extends UK-wide, and the date you get hangs on the calendar rather than how far away you are.
A word on Ednam
Ednam is a small village situated on the riverside in the Scottish Borders, with a population of around 159 people. Ednam has a mix of housing, but predominantly features detached homes, and is located near to other small settlements such as Edham, Houndridge, and Sprouston. Ednam sits at an elevation of 42 metres, close to the River Tweed, and is within commuting distance of Edinburgh, which is 37.5 miles away. Ednam is also relatively distant from major English cities, with London being approximately 299.7 miles to the south.
Questions Ednam drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Can I just take it for a long drive?
- Sometimes, if you spot it early enough and the vehicle has not dropped into limp mode. Fifteen minutes to The Co-operative Food and back will not be enough; motorway speed, kept for a stretch, will.
- The visit takes how long?
- It is typically around 2 hours. A badly blocked filter can take a second clean, which extends that.
- What does it run to around Ednam?
- The call-out charge covers the visit, the scan and the advice; treatment itself opens from £299. The vehicle and your address both change the price, so we price on the phone.
- Have I got to be there?
- No. The vehicle requires a spot to stand for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. Wanting to be there is welcome: the regeneration then runs out on the open road, monitored.
- How soon can someone come to Ednam?
- Depending on the diary, often same-day or next-day is usual. Phone 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what is available across the TD area.
- The filter — does it leave the vehicle?
- Not on the call-out service — it is cleaned where it is. We do not get filters off or put them back on, in either direction.
- What if the light comes back?
- Aftercare falls inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer coming back to Ednam.
