What the car has been warning you
The light is last news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been building for some time:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- you notice the revs fall short of where they always went
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair bet.

Eau Brink is a small village, and the motoring that comes with one is the worst sort for a DPF. Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never move are freed after that, by a cleaning fluid passed through the access point on that vehicle, which opens out inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to need doing twice.
A regeneration is next, driving off what the clean has freed. Either it runs as a monitored drive out of Eau Brink, with you there, or it goes where the car stands and the running data is read afterwards.
Then a second diagnostic, confirming the change, resetting the warning light and logging anything still logged. Both read-outs are emailed, so the before and after figures are kept.
When a DPF clean is not the solution
Only one fault is fixed by treatment: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does little for:
- the wrong signal from a temperature sensor
- an EGR valve stuck open
- a fault in the AdBlue system
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration completing in the first place
- turbo failure, with oil entering the filter
Which is why the scan goes first. Turning out to be one of them means hearing it before work starts, not after handing over a penny.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no fix. What gets searched for as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into use.
