East Looe, Cornwall: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With mobile DPF cleaning, we drive out to the motor. An engineer turns up at your address in East Looe, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the motor, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you came with.
You'll be given a number by phone before anyone departs, the clean opening from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.
The light is showing and the vehicle is down on power — that is how we normally meet people, and what this page is about.
Your DPF light is lit — what next?
It could not be the unit in the end. That is the opening thing. A diagnostic comes before all cleaning, because that same dash light has several possible faults behind it.
The driving you get in the meantime matters. That is the other thing.
- A long even run may even now do it, provided the light is amber and the motor runs normally. Costs zero, so attempt that before calling.
- Vehicle already fallen into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not shift it now.
- A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the moment to stop planning long drives and call.
Before the light, what the car was telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have usually been growing for a while:
- tailing off on power, especially uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as they should
- worse fuel consumption
- the stop/start without a word bowing out
- the car smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on
None of that is evidence alone. Alongside the light with them, the filter is a fair guess.
The cause diesel particulate filters block round East Looe
East Looe is a residential suburb, and the day-to-day driving that comes with one is the poorest kind for a DPF. The school run to Looe Primary Academy, East Cliff at a halt at half eight, a few minutes to Co-op Food, the run to Looe — not one bit of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. Instead of burning away, the soot load collects.
The map does not help either. The M5 is under 50 miles from East Looe and Plymouth is under 15 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way routinely, weeks pass without the long unbroken run that would empty the filter on its own.
Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration
It is self-defence: that is all limp mode means. Power is held down, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter requires can no longer happen — which is the entire catch, because a sustained drive works by starting that regeneration.
So the common advice to take it up the motorway is sound advice, up until it is not. In limp mode you are the far side of that point: treatment is what will do it, not more driving.
The car stays in place for on-site DPF cleaning across East Looe
On your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can stand for a few hours: the job takes place with the filter still fitted on, which is the detail most drivers do not expect.
A diagnostic happens first — running data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a review of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and related components, so other faults are cleared before any of it is started.
A cleaning fluid then is fed in through the entry point on that motor, opening out inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. A second pass is sometimes required on heavily loaded filters.
What the clean has loosened is then burned off by a regeneration. That is a monitored drive out of East Looe if you are along, or a static regeneration where the vehicle stands, with the live data verified after.
Both reports come through by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second check is what verifies the change, clears the light and logs whatever is still showing.
When a DPF clean is not the answer
One thing is what treatment answers — a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:
- temperature or pressure sensors reporting a block that is not there
- a failed EGR valve
- AdBlue system failures
- faulty glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever starts
- oil passing through the filter from a faulty turbo
Finding that out is the first scan's job. You are told before the work starts, not after you have paid, where it turns out to be one of those.
Cutting the filter out is not a fix: without a working DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the phrase people look up, though nothing is replaced — your existing filter is treated in place and sent back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
Costs for DPF cleaning across East Looe
The clean starts from £299. A call-out charge covers every visit, and covers the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that comes with it.
No flat rate would be straight, so the number is fixed on the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. The vehicle moves it, and so does the postcode — East Looe, Plaidy, or somewhere otherwise out in the PL postcode area.
A clean that will not do it is not treatment you pay for, and the check is what says so. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone came out, did the diagnostic and gave you the advice.
The work includes a 30-day warranty including aftercare, including an engineer travelling back out to East Looe if the light comes back inside that period.
Had my cars dpf cleaned 3 days ago and warning light has not come on. Its a little early to tell if its fixed, but so far so good.
Done with efficiency and professionalism. Will recommend. Peter was very friendly and easy to talk to. Very professional. Very happy customer.
Mechanic who did the dpf cleaning was really good at his job, explained everything he was doing and gave me some pointers on keeping the dpf cleaner for longer. It is pricey but cheaper than replacing the dpf.
Where we travel round East Looe, and what we clean
The filter is done in place on all of them: cars and estates, vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant machinery, agricultural machinery. Nothing is carried anywhere.
Most weeks there is usually someone on East Cliff, so East Looe rarely means a journey of its own, and Plaidy, Hannafore and the places past Looe come with it. Farther out around Cornwall is still worth a call — coverage reaches UK-wide, and it is the calendar rather than the distance that picks between this day and the next.

Frequent questions on DPF cleaning in East Looe
- Is a long drive enough alone?
- Quickly enough, and with the motor out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it takes — not ten minutes flat to Co-op Food and back.
- The visit lasts how long?
- Count on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean lengthening that where the filter is heavily blocked.
- Across East Looe, what does it run to?
- The call-out charge pays for the visit, the check and the advice; cleaning itself starts from £299. Both the vehicle and where you are change it, which is why settling it goes by phone.
- Must I be present in person?
- The vehicle requires a place for two hours or so. Nobody expects you to be in it. Travel along if you prefer, and the regeneration turns into a supervised drive.
- How soon can someone come to East Looe?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is currently in the diary. Call 0303 330 1830 and we will tell you what is available across the PL area.
- Will the filter be removed?
- It is done where it stands, on the call-out service. That work — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
- The light returns — then what?
- Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to East Looe.
