The car has been warning you already
The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have usually been building for a while:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- the revs no longer pull the way they used to
- the fuel economy is poorer
- stop/start quietly giving up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the box
That is not conclusive alone. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
Choked diesel particulate filters round Each End, and the cause

- the wrong reading from a temperature or pressure sensor
- the EGR valve held open
- a fault in the AdBlue system
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration completing whatsoever
- turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter
The first check is there for exactly that. When one of those proves the fault, you hear about it in advance rather than once the money has left altogether.
Hollowing the filter out is not a remedy: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the phrase people search for, though nothing is swapped — your existing filter is treated in place and put back into use. Two more worth noting.
