Mobile DPF Cleaning across Dunbar, East Lothian
With on-site DPF cleaning, we travel to the motor. No garage, no filter leaving. A technician drives out to your address across Dunbar, treats the diesel particulate filter where it is, runs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you came with.
Nobody leaves until the price is settled on the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean starts from £299.
The light is showing and the car is short of power — that is how we normally find people, and what this page is about.
The DPF light is on. What then?
Not the unit, automatically. Main thing to note. A diagnostic goes before any work, because that same dashboard light has several possible faults behind it.
The driving you do in the meantime counts. That is the next thing.
- Amber light, motor still driving fine — a long steady run can yet clear it by itself. Costs nothing at all, and worth trying before you ring anything.
- That window has gone once the motor has fallen into limp mode. Motoring will not get there now.
- Get it seen to rather than driving it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
What the car has been showing you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been going wrong for some time. It is late news:
- less power, above all climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- the fuel use is poorer
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
None of that is evidence by itself. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
The explanation diesel particulate filters block around Dunbar
Being a coastal town, Dunbar throws up exactly the use a DPF manages least well. The school run to the local primary school, High Street at a halt at half past eight, a few minutes to The Co-operative Food, the dash to the nearest station — none of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. The soot load collects rather than clearing.
The M8 lies under 50 miles from Dunbar, Edinburgh under 50 miles off, and unless something pulls you out that way routinely, full weeks go by without the long steady run that scours a unit. Geography does not oblige.
Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration
Limp mode is the motor protecting itself. The real problem is that a proper drive works by setting off a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not pull and power is capped.
Good advice, that motorway run — up until the point it is not. The filter wants a clean rather than driving once the motor has dropped into limp mode.
On-site DPF cleaning where the motor stands in Dunbar
Most people do not see coming this detail: the filter stays on. The job happens with the DPF still fixed to the vehicle — on your front, in a work car park, wherever the vehicle can sit for a couple of hours.
Nothing is cleaned until other faults are cleared. That requires a scan first: live data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by mass, and a check of the sensor readings, glow plugs and connected hardware.
Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never move are loosened second, by a cleaning fluid passed through the access port on that motor, which expands inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to need doing twice.
A regeneration follows, driving off what the clean has lifted. Come with the vehicle and it is done as a monitored drive out of Dunbar. Park it and the regeneration goes on the spot, with running data checked once it is done.
Then a second check, verifying the change, resetting the warning light and noting anything still showing. Both sets of figures are emailed, so the before and after figures are kept.
The failures a DPF clean cannot cure
A filter choked with soot and ash is the one thing treatment fixes. It will not touch:
- a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a block that is not there
- the EGR valve held open
- a fault in the AdBlue system
- injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration starting in the first place
- oil working through the filter from a worn turbo
That is what the first check is for. When it is found to be one of those, you are warned before any work gets going rather than after you have handed over a penny.
DPF renewal is what people search for, but no part is replaced: the filter you own is treated where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it cut out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth noting.
The price of DPF cleaning in Dunbar
A clean begins from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it takes in the call-out, the booking, the diagnostics and the advice.
The figure is settled on the phone, once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. No flat rate could be honest. What you drive and where you are both change it: Dunbar itself, out at Stanley Place, or further out in the EH postcode area.
Where the scan says a clean will not help, you are not billed for treatment. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone travelled, ran the check and offered you the advice.
Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer comes back to Dunbar.
Great company fast efficient and all members of staff I spoke too including the engineer were outstanding really appreciate it and couldn't recommend enough.
Id recommend DPF Fixer when your dpf needs cleaning. Daniel who attended to my car was friendly, knowledgeable, explaining what the problem was and how he fixed it. I also needed a replacement sensor which Daniel sorted. A very good service. Thank you.
Logan was a Great honest guy who gave a great service. Arrived on time, explained process and would highly recommend.
The vehicles we clean and the patch we take in near Dunbar
The one call-out service spans private cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery and agricultural machinery, and on every one the filter is cleaned where it sits rather than taken anywhere.
Most weeks there is usually someone on High Street, so Dunbar hardly ever means a journey of its own, and Stanley Place, Winterfield Mains and the places past West Barns come with it. It is the calendar, not the distance, that decides whether it is one day or the next, and coverage runs UK-wide — so ring even from even further out around East Lothian.

Things Dunbar drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough by itself?
- It might, provided you catch it early enough and limp mode has not arrived. That requires motorway speed for a long run, rather than a short trip to The Co-operative Food.
- How long does the visit run?
- Allow typically around 2 hours — badly clogged filters sometimes take a second pass, which lengthens it.
- What does it run to across Dunbar?
- A clean begins from £299, and the call-out charge on top pays for the visit, the check and the advice. The vehicle and your address both shift the figure, so we price on the phone.
- Have I got to be present?
- Somewhere for the vehicle to wait, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. If you would prefer to come along, the regeneration can be done as a watched drive instead.
- Coming to Dunbar — how soon?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the diary. One ring to 0303 330 1830 and you will know what the EH area has available.
- Is the filter taken off the car?
- It is done where it stands, on the call-out service. And neither does taking a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- What if the light reappears?
- Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Dunbar.
