Before the light, what the vehicle was warning you
Symptoms have generally been mounting for a while before the light even appears. Late news, in other words:
- pulling uphill, the power tails off
- revs that will not pull the way they used to
- worse fuel economy
- without a word, the stop/start bows out
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
That is not proof by itself. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
The cause diesel particulate filters choke near Drury Square
The day-to-day driving that comes with a small village like Drury Square is the least kind kind for a DPF. Why limp mode blocks a DPF regeneration
The car is defending itself, which is what limp mode is. With output capped and the revs held, the regeneration the filter needs can never complete at all. That matters, because setting off one is exactly what a sustained run does.
The common advice — get it up the motorway — is sound, up until it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are the far side of that line, and the filter wants treatment rather than road work.

Soot and ash that a regeneration on its own will never shift are loosened next, by a cleaning fluid passed through the access port on that car, which opens out inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to need doing twice.
What the clean has freed is then driven off by a regeneration. Ride along with the motor and it becomes a monitored drive out of Drury Square. Leave it and the regeneration is done in place, with running data read once it is done.
A second diagnostic verifies the change, puts out the warning light and lists anything still showing. Both sets of figures are emailed over, so you end up with the before and after figures to hand.
What a DPF clean will not fix
Only one fault is cured by treatment: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does no good for:
- the wrong signal from a pressure or temperature sensor
- an EGR valve jammed open
- a failure in the AdBlue system
- faulty glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever completes
- turbo problems, with oil reaching the filter
Which is why the scan happens first. You are let know before any work starts, not after you have settled up, should it turns out to be one of those.
A couple more worth noting. Having the filter cut out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your original filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.
