Before the light, what the car was telling you
The light is last news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have normally been mounting for weeks:
- pulling uphill, the power tails off
- revs that will not rise the way they once did
- economy that is worse than it used to be
- a stop/start that has silently given up
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
On its own, none of that is evidence. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
