Before the light, what the car was showing you
By the time the light appears, things have normally been going wrong for a while. It is belated news:
- less power, especially going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- fuel use getting worse
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the box
None of that is proof by itself. It is a fair guess the filter is full once the light is on as well.
