Downs, The Vale of Glamorgan: Mobile DPF Cleaning
The vehicle stays where it is — mobile DPF cleaning goes to it. Your vehicle isn't taken away and the filter does not come off. A technician comes at your place over in Downs, cleans the diesel particulate filter fitted to the car and performs a DPF regeneration.
Budget for the visit running typically around 2 hours. The clean starts from £299, fixed by the phone before anyone leaves.
If the light is on already and the car is short of power, this page is for you. That is how most people end up here.
What to try when the DPF light is on
Not the unit, automatically. Opening thing to get straight. A check comes before the cleaning, because that same dash light has a number of possible faults behind it.
It tells what you do with the vehicle between now and the visit.
- Motor still driving normally on an amber light — have a go at a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and frequently clears the filter without a visit.
- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has now gone.
- Get it seen to rather than using it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the throttle, has gone past the long-run stage.
Signs the car has been giving you
Last news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for weeks before it shows:
- climbing uphill, the power falls off
- the revs no longer rise the way they always did
- worse fuel consumption
- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
What blocks diesel particulate filters near Downs
The driving that goes with a rural village like Downs is the poorest sort for a DPF. Run through a normal week: the local primary school and home again, Grant's Field at a standstill before nine, a five-minute run to M&S Foodhall, a dash to Waun-Gron Park. None of it there runs long enough or gets hot enough to complete a regeneration. The soot that should burn away banks up instead.
Except when you have a standing cause to head out to the M4, under 5 miles from Downs, or across to Cardiff under 5 miles away, weeks go by without a long steady drive. Geography is no help.
The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer complete
Limp mode is the car protecting itself. With output held down and the revs held, the regeneration the filter wants can never complete at all. That tells, because setting off one is just what a sustained run does.
Running it up the motorway is the common advice, and it holds up to a point. Once the motor is in limp mode you are past that line, and the filter needs a clean rather than road work.
DPF cleaning at the motor across Downs
Nothing comes off the car. That throws people. The DPF stays fitted where it is and the work goes on around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, any place it can stand for a couple of hours.
First a diagnostic. Running ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a figure, the sensor readings, the glow plugs, the associated parts — all of it logged before any of it is started.
A cleaning solution then is fed in through the access port on that vehicle, expanding inside the filter to lift soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never move. Where the filter is severely loaded, plan on a second pass.
Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean lifted. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of Downs; if not, statically where the vehicle waits, with the running data checked once done.
Both sets of figures go over by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second check is what confirms the change, clears the light and notes whatever is still open.
The failures a DPF clean cannot cure
Only one fault is cured by cleaning: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does no good for:
- a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a restriction that is not there
- a jammed EGR valve
- a fault in the AdBlue system
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration completing in the first place
- turbo trouble, with oil entering the filter
Finding that out is the first diagnostic's purpose. Proving to be one of them means hearing it before work starts, not after paying a penny.
Gutting the filter out is not a solution: without a working DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the term people type in, though nothing is swapped — your own filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
DPF cleaning costs around Downs
A call-out charge stands whatever follows, and covers the visit, the booking fee, the check and the advice given. The clean itself opens from £299.
No single flat rate would be truthful, so the figure is settled over the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. What you run and where you are both move it: Downs itself, over at Twyn-yr-odyn, or further out within the CF postcode area.
Treatment that will not do it is not cleaning you pay for, and the scan is what says so. You even so pay that charge: someone came out, ran the diagnostic and gave you the advice.
The job carries a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer travelling back out to Downs if the light comes back inside that time.
I waited a month just to see, but now I'm so happy with their work, Wonderful company, easy booking, they really do their work impeccably and are reasonably flexible. They did work on my civic, ash values went from 66grams to 0.
Had my Dpf cleaned today after after séseveral attempt from garage. It was a pleasant and professional work done by Liamf. I will definitely recommend at 100%.
The engineer who came (Daz) was very efficient explained the whole process to me. It was clear he had a great deal of experience on dpf problems and their resolutions. Job well done.
Vehicles we clean, and where we reach round Downs
Whatever it is — car, light van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, agricultural machine — the same mobile service stands, and the filter never leaves it.
Downs is rarely a special trip: technicians are out on Grant's Field most weeks, and the same run picks up Twyn-yr-odyn, St Lythans and the spots out past St Nicholas. Even further out around The Vale of Glamorgan is still worth ringing about — coverage runs UK-wide, and it is the schedule rather than the distance that picks between today and tomorrow.

Common questions on DPF cleaning in Downs
- Can I just take it for a long drive?
- It may, provided you get it early and limp mode has not arrived. It wants a long run at motorway speed, not ten minutes or so to M&S Foodhall and back.
- Does the visit last long?
- It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily blocked filter can need a second clean, which adds to that.
- What does it come to across Downs?
- It starts from £299, plus the call-out charge covering the visit, the check and the advice. Pricing is done by phone, since what you run and where you are both shift the figure.
- Do I have to be there?
- You need not stand with it — the car just wants a spot to wait for a couple of hours. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a supervised drive instead.
- When can someone get to Downs?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the schedule. Phone 0303 330 1830 and we will tell you what is open across the CF area.
- Will the filter be removed?
- On the mobile service, no: the filter is done in place. We never lift filters off or fit them back on, whichever way.
- What if the light reappears?
- Aftercare falls inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer heading back to Downs.
