By the time the light arrives, things have usually been deteriorating for weeks. It is belated news:
- going uphill, the power falls off
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- consumption that is worse than before
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration
Alone, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
The reason diesel particulate filters block near Downicary
