The motor has been warning you already
Symptoms have normally been growing for some time before the light so much as shows. Late news, in other words:
- less power, especially going uphill
- you see the revs never reach where they once went
- fuel economy turning worse
- stop/start without a word bowing out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. With the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
