First thing: it is not automatically the DPF. That light can come from a number of faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a scan and not with cleaning.

- That window has gone once the car has slipped into limp mode. Motoring will not help now.

What the motor has been warning you
Symptoms have usually been mounting for weeks before the light so much as shows. Late news, in other words:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- economy that is worse than it was
- stop/start silently packing in
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on
That is not evidence by itself. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is showing too.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round Crumlin
