- a stop/start that has silently given up
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is loaded.

Two more worth noting. Getting the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a working DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is treated in place and sent back into use.
