Crockernwell, Devon: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Sorting the DPF happens at the car, not at a workshop. A fitter turns up at your address in Crockernwell, clears the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the car, performs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you arrived with.
The visit lasts typically around 2 hours, the clean opens from £299, and the number is agreed by the phone before anyone leaves.
Most drivers find us with the light already on, and the car low on power. That is exactly what this page is written for.
DPF light on? What comes next
First thing: it is not necessarily the DPF. A diagnostic goes before any treatment, because that same panel light has plenty of likely faults behind it.
How the vehicle is run in the meantime matters too.
- Worth a go before you call anything: amber light, motor driving as normal, just one steady run, no outlay.
- That window has gone once the car has dropped into limp mode. Driving will not help now.
- Get it seen to rather than using it — diesel in the car, or smoke on acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
Before the light, what the car was warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been mounting for weeks:
- dropping away on power, especially uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- worse fuel use
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under hard acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. Alongside the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
What chokes diesel particulate filters round Crockernwell
Crockernwell is a rural village, and the motoring that goes with one is the worst type for a DPF. A regeneration takes the time and heat, and sees none: not on the school run to Cheriton Bishop Community Primary School, not on Stonelands at half past eight, not on five minutes to The Co-operative Food, and not on the hop to Yeoford. What should clear remains.
Where you sit does not oblige either. The M5 is under 15 miles from Crockernwell and Exeter is under 15 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way often, entire weeks go by without the long unbroken run that would clear the filter on its own.
Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working
Limp mode is the vehicle looking after itself. Power is capped, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter wants can not run — which is the whole problem, because a proper drive works by starting that regeneration.
Taking it up the motorway is the usual advice, and it works right up to a point. In limp mode you are past that stage: a clean is what will work, not more road work.
On-site DPF cleaning where the motor stands round Crockernwell
On your front, in a work car park, wherever the car can sit for a couple of hours: the job happens with the filter still fitted on, which is the bit most owners do not see coming.
The ECU is taken first, reporting soot load by percent and by mass, along with a look over of sensor feeds, glow plugs and related components, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.
Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never budge are loosened second, by a solution passed through the access point on that car, which expands inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to need doing twice.
What the clean has loosened is then driven off by a regeneration. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Crockernwell; if not, on the spot where the vehicle stands, with the live data read once done.
Then a second check, proving the change, putting out the warning light and noting anything still showing. Both reports are emailed over, so the before and after figures are on record.
When a DPF clean is not the fix
Only one fault is answered by a clean: the filter clogged with ash and soot. It does no good for:
- a temperature or pressure sensor showing a block that is not there
- the EGR valve held open
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration running whatsoever
- a turbo putting oil through the filter
Which is why the scan happens first. Where it is found to be one of those, you are warned before any work gets going rather than after you have paid anything.
Two more worth noting. Getting the filter cut out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your own filter is treated in place and sent back into use.
Costs for DPF cleaning around Crockernwell
A call-out charge holds whatever happens, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the check and the advice offered. Treatment itself opens from £299.
Once we know what you run, and broadly what the filter will take, the price gets fixed by phone. A single price for all would not be truthful. Two separate things change it: what you drive, and where you are — Crockernwell itself, across at Preston, or further out within the EX postcode area.
Where the diagnostic says treatment will not help, you are not asked to pay for cleaning. The call-out charge even so holds, because the visit, the scan and the advice have happened.
The work comes with a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Crockernwell if the light reappears inside that period.
Really pleased with service. They communicated exceptionally well & Dave really pulled out all the stops to keep me on the road Explaining everything he did Will definitely recommend to anyone who is in the same situation. Thank you.
I would highly recommend, Balazs the technicians, was very polite and just got on with the job. The engine light has gone and dpf filter cleaned. All paper work of the results and test provided, Great job.
The engineer did a fantastic job, quickly fixed the issue and provided an outstanding service i would highly recommend him.
Vehicles we clean, and where we reach around Crockernwell
One on-site service spans cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant and construction machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is cleaned where it sits rather than taken anywhere.
Most weeks there is usually someone on Stonelands, so Crockernwell seldom means a journey of its own, and Preston, Drewsteignton and the places past Cheriton Bishop come with it. Coverage reaches UK-wide, so farther out through Devon is still worth a call, and what picks between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

What Crockernwell drivers wonder about DPF cleaning
- Can I just take it for a long drive?
- Soon enough, and with the car out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. It wants a long run at motorway speed, not ten minutes or so to The Co-operative Food and back.
- The visit takes how long?
- Allow typically around 2 hours — severely loaded filters sometimes require a second pass, which extends it.
- What does it cost across Crockernwell?
- It starts from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both change the figure.
- Do I have to be present?
- Space for the vehicle to sit, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be run as a watched drive instead.
- How soon can someone come to Crockernwell?
- Depending on the schedule, often same-day or next-day is usual. Ask 0303 330 1830 what is available across the EX area.
- Will the filter be lifted off?
- Done where it stands, on this service, so no. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not something we do.
- And if the light comes back?
- The 30-day warranty takes in aftercare, including an engineer coming back to Crockernwell.
