It may not be the DPF whatsoever. That is the main thing. Cleaning is not where a visit starts. A diagnostic is — plenty of faults show up as the same signal.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then matters.
- A long constant run may still be enough, provided the light is amber and the car runs fine. Costs nothing, so have a go at that before calling.
- Once the car is in limp mode, driving will not touch it. The window has closed.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop planning long drives and get it seen to.
Signs the motor has been giving you
Symptoms have generally been growing for some time before the light even shows. Last news, in other words:
- less power, especially pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- fuel consumption going worse
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is showing too.
The reason diesel particulate filters block near Columbia
For a DPF, the worst motoring is the sort you find in a residential suburb such as Columbia. Run through a normal week: John F Kennedy Primary School and home, Railway Terrace at a standstill before half nine, a five-minute run to The Food Warehouse, a run to Chester-Le-Street. Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no fix. What gets looked up as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your filter is cleaned in place and goes back into work.
