It could not be the DPF in the end. That is the first thing. That light can arise from plenty of faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a check and not with cleaning.
It tells what you do with the motor between now and the appointment.
- A long constant run may yet be enough, provided the light is amber and the motor drives fine. Costs nothing at all, so attempt that before booking.
- Vehicle already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not shift it now.
- A diesel smell in there, or black smoke under the throttle, is the stage to stop booking long drives and ring.
What the vehicle has been showing you
Symptoms have usually been building for some time before the light even appears. Last news, in other words:
- power falling off, above all pulling uphill
- you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
- economy that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has silently given up
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not proof on its own. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
Why diesel particulate filters choke near Collin
For a DPF, the worst driving is the type you meet around a village such as Collin.
