Late news, the light. The symptoms tend to mount for some time before it arrives:

- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- worse fuel use
- stop/start without a word packing in
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
That is not evidence by itself. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.
