What the car has been showing you
The light is last news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been growing for a while:
- power falling off, particularly climbing uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they once did
- worse fuel use
- stop/start quietly giving up
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in there
That is not conclusive on its own. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Why diesel particulate filters clog around Chwilog
Chwilog is a coastal village, and the motoring that belongs to one is the poorest sort for a DPF. A regeneration takes the time and heat, and gets not much: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on B4354 at half eight, not on ten minutes to Aldi, and not on the hop to Penychain. A couple more worth noting. Having the filter cut out is not a solution — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
