The car has been warning you already
The light is last news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been mounting for weeks:
- pulling uphill, the power tails off
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- the fuel use is poorer
- without a word, the stop/start bows out
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
None of that is evidence by itself. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.
The reason diesel particulate filters block around Chilton
