- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has now closed.
- A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the stage to stop arranging long drives and call.
The motor has been showing you already
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been slipping for weeks. It is late news:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they always went
- consumption that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has quietly given up
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.

Two more worth knowing. Having the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
