Chatto, Scottish Borders: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Sorting the DPF takes place at the vehicle, not at a garage. A technician comes at your address across Chatto, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the car, runs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you came with.
You'll know a price by phone before anyone goes, the clean beginning from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.
The light is showing and the car is low on power — that is how we normally come across people, and what this page deals with.
DPF light on? What to do
The filter is not necessarily what is wrong, and that goes first. A check happens before all cleaning, because that same dashboard light has a number of possible faults behind it.
The driving you get in the meantime matters. That is the next thing.
- Worth a try before you book anything: amber light, motor driving as normal, just one even run, no cost.
- Once the vehicle is in limp mode, driving will not reach it. The window has closed.
- Stop arranging long drives and get it checked if the cabin stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you pull away.
Before the light, what the motor was telling you
By the time the light shows, things have usually been going wrong for some time. It is belated news:
- power tailing off, particularly going uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they used to
- the fuel use is poorer
- stop/start quietly packing in
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
That is not conclusive by itself. The light alongside them indicates a blocked filter.
The cause diesel particulate filters choke round Chatto
Chatto is an area, and the day-to-day driving that belongs to one is the poorest type for a DPF. None of it runs long enough or is hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, Belford barely moving at half past eight, ten minutes to Co-op Food, the run to the nearest station. The soot that should burn off collects instead.
Unless you have a standing reason to drive out to the A74(M), under 50 miles from Chatto, or out to Newcastle upon Tyne under 50 miles away, weeks slip past without a sustained run. Geography is no help.
Why limp mode stops a DPF regeneration
The motor is protecting itself, which is what limp mode amounts to. With power capped and the revs pinned, the regeneration the filter needs can never complete at all. That counts, because setting off one is precisely what a motorway run does.
The common advice — get it up the motorway — is sensible, up until it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are the far side of that point, and the filter needs cleaning rather than more driving.
Mobile DPF cleaning where the vehicle stands round Chatto
On your drive, in a work car park, any place the motor can sit for a couple of hours: the job is done with the filter yet fixed on, which is the detail most drivers do not anticipate.
Nothing is started until other faults are ruled out. That requires a diagnostic first: running data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by mass, and a check of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and connected components.
After that comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the car's own access port, spreading inside the filter and lifting what a regeneration never can. Badly clogged filters sometimes need a second pass.
A regeneration is next, clearing what the clean has lifted. That is a monitored drive out of Chatto if you are along, or a static regeneration where the car stands, with the live data read once done.
Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change proven, the light put out, anything still open written down. Both read-outs reach you by email, so the numbers are recorded.
The failures a DPF clean cannot fix
One thing is what treatment fixes — a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- a temperature or pressure sensor showing a block that is not there
- a failed EGR valve
- the AdBlue system failing
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration starting whatsoever
- oil working through the filter from a worn turbo
Finding that out is the first check's purpose. You are let know before all work begins, not after you have handed over, if it turns out to be one of those.
Gutting the filter out is not a fix: without a functioning DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the wording people look up, though nothing is exchanged — your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
Figures for DPF cleaning in Chatto
A clean begins from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it pays for the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.
Naming a flat rate would not be truthful. We settle it over phone, once the vehicle and its probable needs are established. Where you are counts as much as what you own: Chatto itself, Hownam next door, or otherwise out in the TD postcode area.
You are not charged for cleaning that the scan says will not work. Because the visit, the diagnostic and the advice have been done, the call-out charge even so stands.
If the light returns inside that time, an engineer heads back out to Chatto — the job includes a 30-day warranty including aftercare.
Engineer arrived within 2 hours of my phone call! He was polite and helpful, explained everything and did exactly what he said he would, perfect!
Darren came on Friday 19th September to clean DPF on my vivaro done 400 miles now and running fine.
Great work from Daz cleaning the DPF and all round great advice and information. And all done at home with their door to door service.
Where we reach around Chatto, and what we clean
The one on-site service covers private cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery and farm vehicles, and on every one the filter is done in place rather than carried anywhere.
Our engineers are along Belford nearly every week, so Chatto is hardly ever a special trip, and the same run picks up Hownam, Howgate and the villages out past Oxnam. Phone anyway from even further out around Scottish Borders. Coverage extends UK-wide, and the date you get hangs on the calendar rather than how far away you are.

Things Chatto drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Can I simply take it for a long drive?
- Sometimes, if you catch it early and the vehicle has not dropped into limp mode. A steady run at motorway speed is what it takes — not fifteen minutes to Co-op Food and back.
- How long does the visit take?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly blocked filter can need cleaning twice, which runs on.
- How much does it cost across Chatto?
- Opening from £299, with a charge for the call-out that takes in the scan and advice on what to do next. Pricing is done by phone, since what you run and where you live both move the figure.
- Do I have to be present?
- You do not need to stand with it — the motor just wants somewhere to sit for a couple of hours. Choosing to be there is no problem: the regeneration then is done out on the road, monitored.
- When can someone travel to Chatto?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is already in the schedule. Ask 0303 330 1830 what is open across the TD area.
- Does the filter come off the vehicle?
- Not on the mobile service — it is cleaned where it is. Neither job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
- And if the light returns?
- Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Chatto.
