What to do when the DPF light shows
First thing: it is not automatically the unit. Cleaning is not where a visit opens. A scan is — several faults show up as the same light.
It matters what you manage with the motor between now and the booking.
- Amber light, motor still driving as normal — a long constant run can still shift it on its own. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you book anything.
- A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has now shut.
- Diesel smell in the cabin, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it checked.
The vehicle has been telling you already
Last news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for a while before it shows:
- climbing uphill, the power drops away
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- the fuel use is worse
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
That is not conclusive by itself. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is showing too.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around Central
For a DPF, the poorest use is the type you find across a residential suburb such as Central. The school run to the local primary school, Westgate Street at a standstill at half past eight, ten minutes to Eastern Chinese Supermarket, the hop to Cardiff Central — nothing of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. What should burn away stays put.
Where you sit does not assist either. The M4 is under 5 miles from Central and Cardiff is under a mile away, so unless something carries you out that way often, entire weeks pass without the long unbroken run that could scour the filter by itself.
DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode ends it
What limp mode means is the vehicle defending itself. The whole catch is that a proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and once in limp mode the revs will not pull and power is capped.
Good advice, that motorway run — until the day it is not. The filter wants treatment rather than driving once the car has dropped into limp mode.
Where the vehicle stands is where the DPF is treated in Central
The filter does not budge. That is the bit most owners do not anticipate: the job is done with the DPF yet fixed to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, anywhere the motor can sit for a while.
Nothing is started until other faults are eliminated. That involves a check first: real-time data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by mass, and a look over of the sensors, glow plugs and connected components.
Then comes the clean itself: solution in through the motor's own entry point, opening out inside the filter and freeing what a regeneration will not. Badly loaded filters sometimes take a second pass.
A regeneration comes next, driving off what the clean has freed. That is a monitored drive out of Central if you are there, or a static regeneration where the car waits, with the live data checked after.
A second check confirms the change, puts out the warning light and lists anything still showing. Both sets of figures are emailed, so you end up with the before and after figures on record.
When a DPF clean is not the answer
Treatment cures one thing: a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- temperature or pressure sensors reporting a block that is not there
- an EGR valve stuck open
- AdBlue system problems
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever starts
- a turbo pushing oil through the filter
That is what the first check is for. Turning out to be one of them means learning it before the work starts, not after paying anything.
A couple more worth knowing. Having the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
