Before the light, what the car was telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been growing for a while:
- less power, particularly climbing uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they always did
- worse fuel use
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
The reason diesel particulate filters block around Catterline
